Collectively, we have spent years working on reforms in Ukraine on behalf of government, civil society and international organizations. The idea of Naradigma was born many years ago, when a colleague shared a story about his first ride in a marshrutka
. He was delighted to get a front seat and take in the new city - until people started passing money to him. He was confused, certain he didn’t need charity from passengers some of who looked like they might need it more than he did. And when he refused these “donations,” people became genuinely upset. Only later did he learn that this is simply the Ukrainian way of passing payment to the driver particularly in this type of transportation.
Having worked with expatriates in Ukraine and abroad for more than a decade as a senior advisor, I’ve heard countless stories like this. Every culture is unique, and every country has its own unwritten rules. They shape not only daily life but also institutional behavior, decision-making, and entire state paradigms. Not understanding these nuances can cost time, money, reputation - and sometimes just your peace of mind.
